IST Cyber Director

The Institute for Security and Technology is looking for a Cyber Director to help direct our cutting-edge cyber portfolio with strategic insights, bold leadership, and creative initiative.

Work Description

IST has a diverse cyber portfolio that prioritizes creating actionable solutions and working with technical practitioners to inform our work. Our goal as a nonprofit is to bridge the gap between cybersecurity experts and government agencies to improve collaboration and progress in the cyber ecosystem.

We are looking for a Cyber Director who is comfortable talking to both hackers and 3-star generals to guide our major cyber initiatives and serve as a key member of IST’s cyber team. Responsibilities will include helping direct and deliver initiative goals, setting the agenda for new and diverse initiatives, maintaining and expanding strategic partnerships with cybersecurity organizations, and serving as a thought leader on behalf of IST in the policy and technology communities.

This position will work closely with the Chief Strategy Officer and CEO to shape and lead a number of upcoming and ongoing initiatives, including work on the Ransomware Task Force, a successful coalition that IST facilitated which recently published an 81-page report advising both industry and governments to take steps to curb the rise of ransomware. IST also works across the technology spectrum, with initiatives spanning BGP routing, botnets, AI and automation and data privacy. 

Residence in the San Francisco Bay Area is preferred.



  • 6-8 years experience in government or industry working on security, technology, or technology policy
  • Ability to lead multiple large projects in tandem and ensure product delivery, including supervision of staff
  • Experience building and maintaining strategic partnerships
  • Strong analytic, written, and communications skills


  • General knowledge of emerging technology trends in cybersecurity, ML/AI techniques, democracy, human rights and security, or digital vulnerabilities
  • Deep technical expertise in a given field
  • Experience in national security and foreign affairs
  • Desire to contribute to a dynamic team focused on cyber and national security policymaking
