The Institute for Security and Technology (IST), a 501(c)(3) critical action think tank that unites technology and policy leaders to create solutions to emerging security challenges, is actively seeking a Multimedia & Communications Assistant to help translate our technical and policy research into engaging, visually-appealing graphics, videos, webpages, and more. Position
Successful candidates will be well-versed in a wide range of mediums through which research and project updates can be shared, and believe in making an impact through storytelling and audio-visual content. Interest and willingness to learn about the ways that various national security and technology communities can come together to create solutions to emerging security challenges is a plus. The Multimedia & Communications Assistant will work closely with the IST Communications Team, reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications, as well as collaborate with all of the project and research teams at IST.
Key responsibilities
- Develop strategy for IST multimedia content, including videos, web-based interactive content, infographics, static graphics and reports, and the IST podcast.
- Work closely with IST research teams to translate project team research outputs into engaging, interactive, visually-appealing content.
- Oversee the IST website, keeping it up-to-date, relevant, and functional. Troubleshoot web-related issues, engaging external vendors when necessary.
- Use strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite to create graphics for print and digital, including large-scale reports, social media graphics, and event graphics.
- Craft storylines and storyboards for video and visual content.
- Develop and produce basic video content, including interviews and short clips, to highlight IST’s research and ongoing efforts.
- Engage with external podcast vendor to help produce monthly IST podcast.
- Assist IST’s communications team with other communications-related projects as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or a related field and 2-3 years of experience producing multimedia content, including graphics, videos, and/or webpages. (Will consider candidates with 4-5 years of experience in lieu of degree.)
- Excellent project management, organizational, and communication skills.
- Able to multitask efficiently and work collaboratively.
- Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro, or other software for video editing and graphics.
- Knowledge of data visualization techniques and best practices.
- Understanding of graphic design principles.
- Knowledge of basic web development and design principles.
- As required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), IST only employs persons legally eligible to work in the US. New employees must complete an I-9 Form and provide actual documents verifying their identity and eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) business days of the date of hire. IST participates in the E-Verify program to electronically verify employment eligibility.
- This position is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
Preferred:
- Experience in video editing and production.
- Familiarity with WordPress or other major CMS.
- Experience in website management and coding.
- Awareness of the national security & emerging technology landscape
Compensation and benefits
The expected annual base salary range for this role is $58,000 to $67,000.

Compensation is dependent on experience and is based on IST’s good faith estimate for this position, in San Francisco, CA, as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay, exact job title, and role will depend on a variety of job-related factors, including where you place on our internal performance ladders, which is based on factors including past work experience, relevant education, and performance on our interviews or in a work trial.
Location
IST is a remote organization. Due to our focus on convening stakeholders for in-person meetings and working groups, candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Washington, DC area are preferred. IST has established a physical office in downtown Washington, DC and may require any incumbent in that area to work from that office part time. Similarly for incumbents residing in the Bay Area, IST may establish a physical office within the area and, if so established, may require any incumbent residing in the area to work from that office part time.
