Nile Johnson is the Senior Director for Applied Trust and Safety for the Institute for Security and Technology. She began her career as a Team Leader with AmeriCorps, and served at the White House, on Capitol Hill, and with the U.S. Department of State prior to joining the U.S. Foreign Service. During her time as a Foreign Service Officer, Nile covered a range of foreign policy topics, including trade and economic policy in sub-Saharan Africa which included working in and traveling to Gabon, Mauritius, and Mozambique. Nile also served in Brussels as the acting Visa Chief at U.S. Embassy Brussels and as the Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. Mission to the European Union. 

After joining a political campaign, Nile transitioned into tech where she worked for ThousandEyes, Inc., a network intelligence company now part of Cisco, and for JUUL Labs, Inc. building its first corporate responsibility and trust program. Following this, Nile joined Google, Inc. as a core member of its inaugural Global Elections Integrity team under the Trust and Safety organization where she led company wide global elections strategy across a host of product areas.  Following this, Nile continued her work in trust and safety by leading regulatory transparency efforts in content moderation for the U.S and APAC region.

With a decade and a half of experience at the intersection of public service, policy, and technology across the public and private sectors, Nile’s extensive background includes trust & safety; technology policy; foreign and public policy; regulatory and government affairs; corporate responsibility; board directorship; building and scaling technical programs and internal and external processes; tech startups; and big tech.

Nile is currently an Advisory Board member for Marketplace Risk, the world’s foremost resource for risk management, trust and safety, regulatory and compliance, and legal strategy, as well as a board member with the American University Alumni Board. Nile earned her Master of Arts in International Affairs from the American University School of International Service and her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Spelman College.
