Vera Zakem is a Senior Technology and Policy Advisor with Institute for Security and Technology. She is a recognized leader in driving strategy, research, and policy development at the intersection of technology, disinformation and influence campaigns, cybersecurity, human rights, and global conflict. Vera is also the Founder of Zakem Global Strategies, LLC, a mission-driven women-owned consultancy that serves governments, industry, and civil society seeking to solve pressing societal challenges through strategy, collaboration, and policy engagement.
Prior to joining IST, Vera led strategy and research at Twitter, leading initiatives to continuously serve Twitter’s customers globally. Prior, she served as a leader in strategy, partnerships, research, and policy engagement at various think tanks and industry organizations in Washington, DC, including the CNA Corporation, where she spearheaded initiatives on global influence and advised senior policymakers, military and global leaders on Russia and Europe, disinformation, influence, and global conflict. Vera serves as a member of the Bipartisan Task Force on US Strategy to Support Democracy and Counter Authoritarianism.
Vera publishes and appears in the media regularly to discuss elections, cybersecurity, disinformation, and technology policy in various outlets including the New York Times, NPR, and BBC. Vera is a Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations, was selected as a Young Leader (Class of 1999) as part of Swiss-American Foundation, and has been recognized by Working Mother Magazine in ensuring women have a seat at the table in policy, the boardroom, industry, and academia. She received her M.A. from the Johns Hopkins University, and is fluent in Russian and Spanish. When not working, you can find her spending time with her husband, two kids, and her fabulous cat, Mina.
