Leah Walker is a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Security and Technology. Her portfolio includes research on defense systems such as nuclear weapons, NC3 and C3, submarine and UUV technology, as well as research into strategic economic influence, most notably Chinese influence in novel technology sectors. In keeping with IST’s mission, Leah’s work examines the impact of emerging and evolving technologies on traditional defense systems, with a particular eye to artificial intelligence and machine learning and its growing integration into defense technologies globally. She is also working on a compendium to understand the intersection of complex system accidents and emerging technology in the 21st century. Her past work includes research on Russian strategic forces and Russia’s military modernization.
While disinformation, affective polarization, and anti-democratic behavior have always existed, the growing scale of these problems, aided in part by the evolving Internet landscape, poses novel threats to democracy.
