Michael Brown

Distinguished Senior Fellow

Michael Brown is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Institute for Security and Technology (IST). He is a Partner at Shield Capital and an advisor to the U.S. Navy’s Science & Technology Board. He served as Tri-Chair of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) Defense Technology Task Force, and is a Member of the CNAS Board of Advisors. Brown previously served four years (2018-2022) as the Director of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) at U.S. Department of Defense. From 2016 to 2018, Brown served as a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow co-authoring a Pentagon study on China’s participation in the U.S. venture ecosystem, a catalyst for the Foreign Investment Risk Review Modernization Act (FIRRMA) signed into law in 2018. Prior to civil service, Brown was the CEO of Symantec Corporation and the former Chairman & CEO of Quantum Corporation.
