Lisa Thiergart is Senior Director of Security Level 5 Task Force at the Institute for Security and Technology (IST). The SL5 Task force aims to create the optionality for US labs to deploy SL5 within 1-3 months from the time point that they choose to. This is a research and engineering effort comprising standards development and prototyping designs and implementations of key components in coordination with industry and government stakeholders, as well as covers a range of coordination functions. Before the task force, Lisa spent two years working as a research manager and then research lead at MIRI where she founded and lead the technical governance team which focuses on verification mechanisms for international coordination, advising government regulatory efforts as well as researches limitations of model evaluations. Lisa also is a technical advisor for the EU code of practice process, grant advisor at Foresight AI grants, mentored for MATS in the previous 2 cohorts, and is a Foresight research fellow. Lisa is a computer scientist with an ML research specialisation including RL for robotics at Georgia Tech, pioneered the technique of Activation Steering with Alex Turner during MATS3, and previously worked for a range of academic labs and startups. Lisa also spent time studying neuroscience, medicine and entrepreneurship, as well as participated in Entrepreneur First in 2022.
