Dr. Chantell Murphy is a member of the inaugural cohort of the Andrew Carnegie AI-Nuclear Policy Accelerator

Dr. Chantell Murphy is a Program Manager and Technical Specialist at the Y-12 National Security Complex, where she develops and leads research addressing emerging challenges in nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards, and verification. Her work focuses on the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into high-stakes domains, with an emphasis on ethics, transparency, and governance. She is an IEEE CertifAIEd Authorized AI Ethics Lead Assessor and has contributed to international discussions shaping the ethical adoption of AI in nuclear safeguards.

Murphy serves on the external advisory board for the Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences department at the University of Michigan. Her research has been published in the Nonproliferation Review and received the 2024 Doreen and Jim McElvany Nonproliferation Grand Prize Award.

Beyond her technical work, she mentors emerging scholars and leads interdisciplinary initiatives connecting nuclear policy, technology ethics, and public engagement. She is the founder and director of Atomsphere, which hosts community workshops on AI and humanity, and co-founder of the Sankofa Arts Alliance of New Mexico, supporting Black artists and cultural storytelling.

Murphy completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation and previously worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory on arms control, national security, and nuclear safeguards. She holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of New Mexico, an M.S. in Health Physics from Georgetown University, and a B.S. in Physics from Florida State University.
