AI is rapidly reshaping how humans interact with technology, society, and one another; however, the voices of faith and religious tradition often remain silent on how these systems should be built and governed. The Religious Voices and Responsible AI Initiative, a joint project between AI and Faith (AIF) and the Institute for Security and Technology (IST), aims to ensure that faith communities can contribute to the future of AI. Working with two distinct faith traditions, the project will develop resources that address AI’s implications for knowledge and truth, accountability and justice, and the safety of rapidly advancing technologies. This initiative is distinctive in bringing together AI safety and security expertise with theological reflection, addressing not only technical questions of control and alignment, but also deeper questions of trust, moral responsibility, and the risks of placing undue hope in systems we do not fully understand.
Today, AIF and IST are honored to together announce the members of the Religious Voices and Responsible AI Steering Committee. Drawn from both organizations’ broad networks of thinkers and practitioners in these subjects and in the two religious groups addressed by this effort, these experts represent a diverse set of experience and expertise from across disciplines of computer science, philosophy and ethics, theology and religious practice, and political science and public policy.
The members of the Religious Voices and Responsible AI Steering Committee will bring their diverse perspectives to the effort, informing the strategy and substance of the initiative’s work. The Steering Committee will offer the project team strategic guidance on partnerships and direction; provide technical and theological insight; and assist AIF and IST with disseminating the results of the project when complete.
